It’s a risk to manually control visitor and employee access to the lobby, interior stairs, and elevators. This expectation may exceed the capabilities of a lobby attendant, diverting their attention and leaving interior spaces open to vandalism and other malicious activities.
Most lobby attendants and security officers are expected to monitor activity and verify the identity of everyone who enters. By automating the access control responsibility, the attendant can focus more attention on preventing vandalism, theft, and other unauthorized activities.
Lobby Automation
With access control at the lobby level, every authorized employee is issued a card credential or uses a biometric to access the secured area. The credential or biometric can be presented at the front door, but the most realistic place for a credential reader is at one or more turnstiles installed in the lobby. Turnstiles may be outfitted with a credential or biometric reader. As an employee approaches the turnstile, they waive their credential over the reader or waive their palm over a biometric reader to activate the turnstile and allow free passage beyond the lobby.
Automation allows the lobby attendant to pay more attention to visitors and other activities in the lobby. When an employee has a card reader or biometric issue, the attendant can step in and quickly resolve the problem.
Aesthetics
Modern turnstiles can be designed to closely match the lobby area and are often customizable to match exact finishes. Glass barriers and low-profile hardware prevent the systems from being an eyesore and preserve the architectural intent of the finest building lobbies.
Performance
In the past, turnstile gate speed, as well as card credential and biometric reader limitations, were a barrier to access controlled lobbies. Today, modern systems provide rapid credential reading, high speed turnstile actuation, and nuisance reduction.
