Disruption
Some organizations have 24/7/365 security onsite that patrols the facility and uses video surveillance to detect potential threats and act as a force multiplier. These organizations are leveraging video surveillance to limit person to person contact and, in many cases, continue business as close to normal as possible. However, many organizations are not staffed by a security force and often rely on infrequent watching of live video and even less frequent retrieval of recorded video for post-incident investigation.
Now that this major disruption has occurred, there needs to be a way for facility managers and other stakeholders to access the video. They will need access to live and recorded streams, remotely for now, and likely for some time to come.
Local Deployment, Remote Access
Many video surveillance solutions are deployed locally. In other words, the video management system software and server, and storage hardware or NVR are installed at the facility. In this case, remote access requires an active connection available via an internet connection, usually over a VPN. Also, the VMS software most often needs to be licensed on a laptop or on a PC at an alternate location. With the proper network settings, software, and hardware, remote access to live and recorded video can be achieved.
Hosted (Cloud), Remote Access
As companies migrate to cloud-based solutions, some are finding creative ways to do the same with their video surveillance solution. For this to work, there must be enough bandwidth available to stream camera feeds to the host service as well as allowing for the retrieval of live feeds and recorded segments for investigations. The benefit of this arrangement, especially during a shut down, is that working from a remote location like a home office, is no different than being at the facility. Access to live and recorded camera feeds is fed to those with proper authorization using a client software program or a browser-based solution.
