When summer break started, there was hope for a more normal return to school in 2021 following the pandemic. Unfortunately, surges in cases and hospitalizations toward the end of summer are complicating back-to-school plans in nearly every part of the country. And while there is important planning to be done to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 in 2021, there are still security and safety measures that need to be addressed. Fortunately, security technology continues to improve and provide additional safety for students, staff, and visitors.
Video Surveillance
Security cameras are now equipped with artificial intelligence that can determine when too many people are in one area or are congregated together too closely. In some cases, these analytics are built into the cameras and in others external servers handle the complicated data analysis. Another advancement is face mask detection. Monitoring health and safety protocols is critical and mask detection is something schools can implement with enhanced video analytics. Finally, cameras and video analytics can also assist in contact tracing to alert schools to exposure risks for faculty, staff and students.
Door Control and Intercom
Consider installing an intercom system to communicate with visitors before they can enter the building to improve both safety and security. Proper identification can be determined prior to entry. Also, medical screening can be started from a safe distance.
Bus Flow Management
Bus lanes can be monitored by intelligent cameras which know the difference between a bus and a car or motorcycle to ensure they are clear for drivers, ensuring an efficient loading or unloading process. When a vehicle blocks this area, the organized flow can be disrupted. Video surveillance cameras can send an alert to staff when someone is parked in the bus lane at specified times of day. This can get the process going to quickly clear the vehicle.
Mass Notification
When an emergency occurs, it is important for students and staff to react quickly and according to clear instructions. Historically, fire alarm drills had everyone evacuate the building in an orderly fashion. Today, new threats require different instructions to be sent to different buildings or parts of buildings. A smart mass communication and public address system can deliver on this requirement.
Cyber Security
The cyber risk that IP devices can bring to a network are also present in the security market. The federal government has taken steps to ensure that IP-connected security cameras and other devices are NDAA compliant. This ensures that security cameras are manufactured only in trusted countries. As a result of the government’s efforts to reduce cyber risk when it comes to security cameras, state and local government agencies are also adopting these rules. Be sure your security cameras and other devices are NDAA compliant. Read more about compliance here >>
