Door Security is a challenge for many schools. Here’s how Vision helped one school resolve theirs.

School security at the front door gets a lot of attention. However, the more difficult areas to secure are the secondary entrances that students and staff use to access exterior spaces or walk from building to building. Leaving the doors unlocked for simpler ingress and egress leaves the school vulnerable.

Procedures, Policies, and Technology Solutions

One school system decided to apply modern technology and update their policies for building access at several of their campuses. Students are still permitted to freely walk between buildings between classes, however, the doors now automatically lock five minutes after each class period begins.

Teachers and staff were issued an access card credential that allows them to open an exterior door from the outside at any time to enter a building. Additionally, they were issued two extra credentials which can be given to students to allow them to open the exterior doors during classes.

When entry to a building is needed and the student member doesn’t have a credential, they can press the button on an intercom station located next to each door on the outside of all the buildings. When activated, the student can talk to administrators to request access. The intercoms are also equipped with a video camera to provide school officials with a visual identification before deciding to unlock the door.

Benefits at a Glance

  • All exterior doors secured during classes
  • Alerts officials when a door is propped open during class time
  • Remote door unlocking by administrators
  • Situational awareness when an entry request is made during class

Thinking Ahead

The Vision team not only designed and installed a technology solution to keep the school safe, they implemented a software platform that is scalable for future expansion of the security solution. By installing Genetec software, Vision has provided the school system with one user interface platform that manages door access control as well as security camera video surveillance. This allows for a unified approach, minimizing complexity during emergency situations and streamlining post-incident investigations.
