We run into a lot of systems that are antiquated and not fully integrated. And it’s no surprise. Technology is improving at breakneck speeds and budgets are slow to keep up with security demands.
For example, an organization may have installed analog cameras five years ago. The following year they installed an access control and intrusion alarm system. Shortly thereafter they decided to keep their doors locked and needed to add an intercom system. As active assailant situations started occurring in workplaces, they installed a public address system and emergency evacuation notification system. It would be no surprise that, five years later, the camera views are well below today’s standards and the multiple disparate systems are slowing down daily operations. In a significant emergency, it would be impossible to operate efficiently.
There’s just not going to be one recipe for success. Every organization, building, and campus is different. They have different environmental considerations, risk factors, and budgets. For that reason, it’s imperative to partner with an experienced security provider for a migration plan.
Which system upgrade comes first?
In most cases, the oldest system is the first to be replaced. That may be the best bet. However, some situations require a new foundation to control basic functions for all other systems.
For example, if the security operation has a security officer monitoring video surveillance 24-7-365, the basis of the system may be the video surveillance platform. Once that system is chosen and installed, the other systems will be selected to work in unison with the video surveillance management system. On the other hand, if the facility doesn’t have an active security force, it may be best to choose an access control solution as the base system, integrating everything else to that system.
Video Surveillance
Recorded video footage is a must and can be a significant expense, especially if you’re considering an entire system replacement. Manufacturers may facilitate stepped migration plans, rather than complete replacements, to compensate for the expense.
For example, an organization may choose to replace the user interface and storage solution first, keeping the existing analog cameras by deploying inexpensive encoder modules that convert the analog feed into an IP feed for the new system to recognize. Then, as time or budget allow, the old cameras can be replaced by new, high resolution IP cameras in subsequent phases.
Access control, emergency notification, and other systems
Access control releases locked doors when authorized credentials are presented. This is one of the two most critical systems for most applications. Upgrades may interfere with normal business operations, so you’ll need a thorough installation plan that works for your organization.
Door locking hardware is an integral component of access control systems. Door hardware also experiences the most wear and should be regularly monitored for replacement. This technology is also becoming smarter, so an upgrade will replace worn hardware while also improving facility safety.
Industry best practices and guidelines, such as NFPA 3000, may also recommend upgrades for mass communication and emergency notification. Addition of new communication systems may require you to upgrade your existing security systems.
